Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have just been updated for the first time in nearly 30 years. And enforcement of the new standards won’t take effect for nearly 10 more years.

Legal ≠ Safe
The federal government’s legal limits are not health-protective. There is even a provision that the EPA can take financial costs into account when setting new safety standards. If someone can “prove” it would be too expensive to fix the problem, then the EPA will just ignore the problem.
Until they can’t anymore.
That’s how we got the “updated” lead standards in 1996. The risks were proven to be too great to ignore any longer.
The EPA just set a new tap water standard for the first time in almost 30 years to address the harmful effects of PFAS and PFOAS. The risks became to great to ignore. These new standards won’t take effect for another 5-10 years and penalties for not following them are minimal.
